Coming from smaller Texan towns, our family moved to the Dallas Fort Worth area to live close to the airport for my husband’s pilot career. We first settled in the far North Fort Worth/Keller neighborhood of The Villages of Woodland Springs for six years. It was a great place to call home and raise our two girls. However, we found ourselves spending every weekend possible in Granbury. We would daydream about the lake when we weren’t there so much that we casually began to look at lake homes for sale. It didn’t take long before we found a newly built home located on a private ski lake adjacent to the main Lake Granbury. We fell in love and were Granbury residents before long.
Lake Granbury is a section of the Brazos River and is contained by the De Cordova Bend Dam. The narrow lake is encompassed by 103 miles of amazing shoreline. Our family enjoys wake surfing the most, but there are numerous other lake activities including kayaking, tubing, wakeboarding, skiing, jet skiing, and fishing.
Because Lake Granbury has a maximum depth of 75 feet, it has some great fishing with largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, white crappie, and sunfish.
Besides the fun lake life, we love the small-town feel of Granbury while it is still close to Fort Worth. We enjoy spending time shopping, dining, and attending events in the charming and historic Granbury town square originally built in the 1800s. It’s easy to see why it was awarded “USA Today’s” Best Historic Small Town in America!
There are various types of businesses located on the square, including boutiques, ice cream shops, and even fine dining. The Silver Saddle Saloon is a great place to stop for a special ice cream treat.
One of my family’s favorite restaurants on the square is delicious German food at Ketzler’s Schnitzel Haus and Biergarten.
But it’s not all about the food. The Granbury Opera House offers live musicals and comedies in a renovated historic venue.
We love to step back in time with a visit to the two-story Queen Anne Victorian Baker-Carmichael House built around the turn of the century. This is a particularly superb and well-kept example of High Style Queen Ann/Neoclassical Architecture full of the rich history of key and prominent Granbury leaders.
Besides the charming historic homes, Granbury’s waterfront properties have many different gorgeous views, are highly sought after, and sell relatively quickly.
Whether you’re ready to live in or visit Granbury as a getaway, you’ll enjoy this small town that is rich in unique culture, Texas history, and adventures on the lake. Life is truly better at the lake!
